Measuring Student Progress

All Chinese Flagship universities conduct systematic testing and tracking of the language development of Chinese Flagship participants as they complete a new sequence of courses and activities in the curriculum. Flagship universities administer online Chinese proficiency tests (or sections of the test) at different times throughout the duration of the program, including the American Councils online exam, which tests student proficiency in reading and listening. American Councils assesses language proficiency at the beginning and end of students' Capstone overseas study through its online exam and through Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) conducted by Language Testing International (LTI). Data from these tests allow the Language Flagship to track students' progress and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in their Chinese proficiency. Data from these tests inform ongoing program and course design.
